Overview Causes Symptoms Treatment
What is a hydrosalpinx?
Hydrosalpinx is a medical condition in which a fallopian tube becomes blocked and filled with fluid, usually due to prior infection, inflammation, or injury. The blockage prevents the egg and sperm from meeting, making natural conception difficult or impossible.

Causes of hydrosalpinx
Hydrosalpinx most commonly develops when a fallopian tube becomes blocked and filled with fluid due to inflammation or scarring. The primary causes are infections, include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), often resulting from sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, which damage the delicate lining of the fallopian tube. Other causes include endometriosis, which can lead to adhesions and blockage, previous pelvic or abdominal surgeries, which may create scar tissue, and tubal infections from other sources. Less commonly, congenital abnormalities or chronic inflammatory conditions may contribute. These blockages prevent normal egg transport, leading to infertility, and can sometimes cause discomfort or pelvic pain.
Symptoms of hydrosalpinx
- Difficulty conceiving or infertility
- Pelvic or lower abdominal pain, sometimes mild or intermittent
- Abnormal menstrual cycles in some cases
- Pain during intercourse (dyspareunia)
- Often, hydrosalpinx may be asymptomatic, with infertility being the first sign
- Positive Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) or Saline infusion Sonohystergram (SIS)
Treatment for hydrosalpinx
The treatment consists of a 20-hour, fully hands-on program delivered over five days. Clear Passage® Therapists use point-specific, deep manual therapy to address adhesions throughout the pelvic region and bowel, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and surrounding ligaments, bones, and connective structures. Our therapists are trained in the Wurn Technique®, which comprises more than 200 individual methods designed not only to target adhesions but also to support whole-body function. It is suggested that the patient is on an antibiotic protocol or antimicrobial regimen during treatment to mitigate the release of any infection that may be in the fallopian tube.
Condition Specific Disclaimer:
Clear Passage® Therapy is a non-surgical, manual physical therapy designed to address adhesions and restricted soft tissue mobility. Some patients report improvement in pelvic mobility and reduced adhesions, which support reproductive function; however, results vary by individual.
