  • Unraveling SIBO: Understanding, Diagnosing, and Conquering Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

(Click title above to read post or scroll below.)

    Introduction

IBO: Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth is a condition where an abnormal increase in bacteria occurs in the small intestine. This overgrowth disrupts the delicate balance of the digestive system, leading to various uncomfortable symptoms. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the nuances of SIBO, from its definition and symptoms to diagnostic techniques, causes, and effective treatment strategies.

    SIBO: What Is It?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, often abbreviated as SIBO, refers to an excessive growth of bacteria in the small intestine. The condition is also known by phrases like “small bowel bacterial overgrowth,” “SIBO overgrowth,” or simply “SIBO.” Normally, the small intestine contains relatively low levels of bacteria, and their presence is crucial for digestion. However, when these bacteria proliferate uncontrollably, they can cause an array of health issues.

    SIBO Symptoms

Identifying SIBO can be challenging due to its diverse range of symptoms. Common signs include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, and excessive gas. Additionally, some individuals may experience nutritional deficiencies due to malabsorption caused by the overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine.

Over 80% of people say that SIBO negatively affects their ability to work, and 100% of people say their social life is negatively affected. Astonishingly, people suffering from SIBO say their grocery bill is higher. These negative side effects and more affect individuals before and even sometimes after treatment.

    SIBO Test

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition characterized by an excessive amount of bacteria in the small intestine, which can lead to a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms. To diagnose SIBO, a breath test is commonly used, known as the SIBO breath test. This non-invasive test measures the concentration of hydrogen and methane gases in the breath after the patient consumes a sugar solution. Normally, these gases are produced in minimal quantities in the small intestine, but with SIBO, bacterial overgrowth leads to higher levels of these gases. The test typically involves fasting overnight, followed by breath samples taken at regular intervals after drinking the sugar solution. These samples are then analyzed to determine the levels of hydrogen and methane, which helps in diagnosing SIBO.

The efficacy of the SIBO breath test makes it a preferred diagnostic method, but it is not without its challenges. The interpretation of the test results can vary, as different labs may use different criteria for what constitutes a positive result. Moreover, the type of sugar used in the solution, such as lactulose or glucose, can affect the outcome and interpretation of the test. Lactulose breath tests are considered more comprehensive as they can detect overgrowth throughout the small intestine, while glucose tests may only identify overgrowth in the upper part. It is important for patients to consult with their healthcare provider to understand the implications of the test results and to consider them in the context of their symptoms and medical history.

    Causes of SIBO

Several factors contribute to the development of SIBO. These include:

    1. Impaired Motility: Reduced movement of the small intestine, often associated with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), can lead to stagnant areas where bacteria thrive.
    2. Structural Abnormalities: Adhesions from previous surgeries or infections can create pockets in the small intestine, providing a haven for bacterial growth.
    3. Immune System Dysfunction: Weakened immunity can result in an inability to control bacterial populations in the small intestine.

    SIBO Diets: Low-FODMAP Diet

The Low-FODMAP (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols) diet is a widely used approach for managing SIBO. It involves restricting certain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, thus reducing the substrate available for bacterial overgrowth. There are plenty of low-FODMAP diet apps out there, and here is a hard copy of Allision Siebecker’s diet guide, for those who like paper.

Types of SIBO and Diagnostic Methods

Methane Positive vs. Hydrogen Positive: Differentiating between methane and hydrogen dominance is crucial. Methane-positive SIBO is often associated with constipation, while hydrogen-positive SIBO is linked to diarrhea. Tailoring treatment to the specific gas profile enhances its effectiveness.

Breath Tests: One of the primary methods for diagnosing SIBO is through breath tests. These tests measure the levels of hydrogen and methane gases produced by bacteria in the small intestine. Elevated levels of these gases indicate bacterial overgrowth.

Antibiotic and Antimicrobial Treatments for SIBO

Antibiotics play a pivotal role in treating SIBO by reducing bacterial overgrowth. Commonly prescribed antibiotics include Rifaximin, Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, Amoxicillin/clavulanate, Metronidazole with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and Metronidazole with cephalexin. Rifaximin, in particular, has shown efficacy in treating SIBO with minimal impact on the overall gut microbiota. Neomycin seems to be more beneficial for those who have hydrogen-based SIBO.

According to the CDC, “Common side effects of antibiotics can include rash, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, or yeast infections. More serious side effects include Clostridioides difficile infection (also called C. difficile or C. diff), which causes diarrhea that can lead to severe colon damage and death.”

If you don’t like the thought of an antibiotic, over-the-counter (OTC) antimicrobials, experts are finding, do just as well. Neem, oil of oregano, or garlic are just a few antimicrobials. There are also dozens of blends of multiple herbs into one tablet or tincture, such as Biocidin, that are very effective. Getting on a good prebiotic and probiotic is also beneficial.

Sharon, a physical therapist at Clear Passage®, who has had recurrent SIBO, stated that the protocol of rotating antimicrobials and/or antibiotics every two weeks for 3 months while receiving treatment is what helped her heal her persistent SIBO.

    Recurring SIBO: Causes and Identification

Persistent or chronic SIBO can be challenging to manage. Causes may include poor ileocecal valve function, adhesions from prior infections or surgeries, poor gut motility, and underlying conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

    SIBO Treatment

Effectively addressing and treating recurring SIBO involves a multifaceted approach:

    1. Ileocecal Valve Function: Restoring proper function of the ileocecal valve is crucial in preventing bacterial backflow into the small intestine. Clear Passage® Therapies has helped countless individuals with a poorly functioning ileocecal valve due to surgery or trauma.
    2. Sibo Therapy: Clear Passage®, a specialized physical therapy, focuses on releasing adhesions through non-invasive techniques, promoting improved gut function and reducing the likelihood of SIBO recurrence. Clear Passage®, WHILE ON AN ANTIBIOTIC PROTOCOL, has stopped recurring SIBO.
    3. IBS Management: Treating underlying conditions like IBS can contribute significantly to preventing persistent SIBO.

“Our therapy targets a common cause of chronic SIBO – adhesions that prevent treated bacteria from leaving the intestine.”

    Clear Passage®

Natural SIBO Treatment at Clear Passage®️

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) is a distressing medical condition often linked with other gastrointestinal issues. It occurs when bacteria common to the large intestine are found in the small intestine, causing symptoms like bloating, nausea, and irregular bowel movements.

The Role of Adhesions in SIBO

Adhesions, the internal scars that form after surgery, trauma, or inflammation, can obstruct the small intestine, trapping bacteria and exacerbating SIBO. Adhesions decrease the effectiveness of medications by preventing treated bacteria from leaving the body. Clear Passage®️ therapy has been shown to reduce intestinal adhesions, so treated bacteria can exit the system. In essence, the therapy enhances the effectiveness of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals to prevent recurrence.

  • Beware of the Gut-Wrecking Halloween Candy!

(Click title above to read post or scroll below.)

    Introduction

Halloween, the spookiest time of the year, is just around the corner. With it comes the tempting allure of candy, from colorful gummies to chocolate bars, and everything in between. While indulging in sweet treats is part of the fun, it’s essential to be mindful of the consequences, especially for your gut health. In this blog, we’ll explore why excess candy consumption can be bad for your gut and provide some tips on how to enjoy Halloween while keeping your gut in check.

The Gut Microbiome: Your Body’s Tiny Ecosystem

Before diving into the downsides of Halloween candy, let’s get to know the gut microbiome. Your gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome. These tiny residents play a crucial role in your overall health, affecting digestion, immunity, and even mood regulation. A balanced gut microbiome is essential for maintaining good health.

The Downfalls of Candy for Your Gut ????

    1. Sugar Overload: Halloween candy is often loaded with sugar, which is the prime culprit behind many gut-related issues. Excessive sugar intake can lead to imbalances in the gut microbiome, promoting the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast.
    2. Gut Inflammation: High sugar intake can cause inflammation in the gut lining, making it more permeable (a condition known as leaky gut syndrome). This increased permeability can allow harmful substances to enter the bloodstream, triggering inflammation throughout the body.
    3. Dysbiosis: Candy consumption can disrupt the delicate balance of gut bacteria, leading to a condition called dysbiosis. When the bad bacteria outweigh the good, it can result in digestive problems, including bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.
    4. Weakened Immunity: A healthy gut is closely linked to a robust immune system. Excess sugar intake can compromise your immunity by suppressing the activity of beneficial gut bacteria, leaving you more susceptible to infections.

    Tips for a Gut-Friendly Halloween ????

    1. Moderation Is Key: Enjoy Halloween candy in moderation. Instead of devouring your entire candy stash in one night, savor a piece or two a day. This way, you can satisfy your sweet tooth without overloading your gut.
    2. Opt for Dark Chocolate: If you’re a chocolate lover, consider dark chocolate with a high cocoa content. It contains less sugar than milk chocolate and boasts potential gut-boosting properties, thanks to its polyphenols.
    3. Choose Healthier Alternatives: Look for candies made with natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup, or those with reduced sugar content. Some brands even offer sugar-free options sweetened with stevia or erythritol.
    4. Fiber-Rich Snacks: Pair your candy indulgence with fiber-rich snacks like whole-grain crackers, nuts, or fruits. Fiber helps promote a healthy gut microbiome by providing nourishment for beneficial bacteria.
    5. Probiotics and Prebiotics: Consider incorporating probiotic-rich foods like yogurt or kefir into your diet to support your gut health. Prebiotic foods, such as garlic, onions, and bananas, can also help nourish the good bacteria in your gut.
    6. Stay Hydrated: Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the Halloween season. Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining a healthy gut and can help flush out excess sugar.

    Conclusion

Halloween candy is undoubtedly tempting, but it’s essential to be mindful of its impact on your gut health. Excessive sugar consumption can wreak havoc on your gut microbiome, leading to various digestive issues and weakened immunity. However, with moderation and smart choices, you can enjoy Halloween treats without compromising your gut. So as you embark on your Halloween candy adventures, remember that a happy gut leads to a happier and healthier you!

  • 7 Questions to Ask Yourself As You Self-Check/Self-Examine

(Click title above to read post or scroll below.)

Even though the national self-check month has ended, we at Clear Passage® are devoted to encouraging people to become more familiar with their bodies by performing a self-evaluation or medical self-check.

A “medical self-check” includes examining your body and then following up on any findings, as well as scheduling routine preventive care with your physician. By identifying symptoms early on—and addressing them— you can help yourself nip health conditions in the bud and prevent them from getting worse or causing you undue stress.

Here is what you need to know about the importance of asking medical questions during the rest of the year.

Why You Should Continue to Self-Check Even When it Feels Uncomfortable

It’s not uncommon to be experiencing a symptom of a health condition and put off addressing it with a medical provider. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Research has shown that being too embarrassed to ask a medical question is very common and can profoundly impact the quality of care that you receive and your relationship with your medical provider. That is why it’s essential to ask health questions, even when you’re unsure.

    Sometimes, people feel:

    • Unsure about whether a sign warrants attention.
    • That symptom may be so vague or infrequent that it is easy to blow off.

It’s important to know that your symptoms may be having a profound impact on your life, but you feel shy or embarrassed to ask about them or regularly check on them. You may not even be aware that a symptom you’re experiencing can be addressed and managed with medical treatment.  As you apply medium pressure on your joints, back, and abdomen, you might find areas for improvement.

7 Important questions to continually ask yourself as you do a medical self-check.

    1. Ask yourself if you’ve noticed changes in your stool patterns.

It may seem strange to consider details of your bowel movements, but if you’re having any changes in your stool patterns—especially if you’ve had a consistent pattern for a long time that’s suddenly different—it’s essential to address. You can either bring this up to your clinician or seek help from pelvic floor physical therapists.

Ask yourself about any changes in your stool color or consistency. For example, changes in your stool color can stem from various causes (such as a new diet or medication), but they can also be a sign of a more critical condition.

Changes in the way that your stool looks—like if you suddenly have stringy poop—could indicate a change in the structure of your colon, among other conditions. If you’re having painful bowel movements, pelvic pain with bowel movements, or if you’re unable to have a bowel movement, you could have a partial bowel obstruction or a condition such as endometriosis. Your doctor may want to perform a more extensive investigation. Depending on your findings, you may be eligible for non-invasive management of your condition using the Clear Passage® approach.

    2. Monitor your unexplained pain.

Be consistently considerate about any unexplained pain you may be experiencing. Sometimes, unexplained pain—especially stomach pain, abdominal pain, pelvic pain, or groin pain—can be caused by a condition known as adhesions, which are internal scars. Adhesions can develop from prior surgery, infection, or injury, and they can cause discomfort.

Sometimes, adhesions can lead to severe conditions such as small bowel obstructions.

Research shows that abdominal adhesions are the leading cause of small bowel obstructions. Managing adhesions can be tricky, as undergoing a surgical procedure to treat adhesions can often lead to the development of even more adhesions. However, a non-surgical, ‘hands-on’ physical therapy approach at Clear Passage® clinics has decreased adhesion pain and increased function without surgery or pharmaceuticals.

    3. Consider any complexities in your sex life.

Your sexual relationships potentially represent the most private and personal aspects of your entire life. It can be intimidating to discuss your sex life with your partner or medical provider.

This is even harder if you’re:

    • Having pain with intercourse (also known as dyspareunia)
    • Experiencing low sexual desire.
    • Have difficulty getting aroused or other sexual concerns.

Talking to your medical provider can significantly improve your quality of life and relationships with all these signs. Often, women are shy to speak specifically about intercourse pain (dyspareunia). Still, painful sex is a widespread condition (affecting nearly one in three women at one point in their lifetime) that can be improved with proper treatment.

A non-invasive, hands-on physical therapy approach can significantly decrease pain with intercourse. Research published in the Journal of Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Disorders showed that patients who received hands-on physical therapy using the Clear Passage® Approach for the treatment of painful intercourse reported:

    4. Think ahead about your family planning and fertility concerns.

If you’re interested in getting pregnant in the future or trying to get pregnant now, you may feel hesitant about whether you will achieve your goal. But, according to the American College of Gynecologists, the definition of infertility is 12 months of trying to conceive without resulting in a pregnancy, and, in women over age 35, infertility is diagnosed after six months of conception attempts.

It’s crucial to be honest with yourself about your fertility and family planning intentions because there are many things you can do to improve your fertility. Still, you must first identify the cause of your infertility.

For example, a blocked fallopian tube contributes to their difficulty getting pregnant for up to 25 to 35 percent of women with infertility. While this condition is sometimes managed with surgical treatment or invasive procedures, a non-invasive, hands-on physical therapy method is also effective in restoring fertility.

    5. While practicing self-checks, consider how to prepare for any upcoming surgeries.

Part of a thorough self-check includes anticipatory planning. When you see your doctor for a routine check-up, make sure to ask about how to prepare for any upcoming procedures or surgeries. That is especially important if you have a history of complications with surgeries such as small bowel obstructions or adhesions. If you know in advance that you have to undergo a surgical procedure, your doctor may recommend ways that you can strengthen your body ahead of time. Your doctor may also recommend a rehabilitation program, such as hands-on physical therapy in the immediate period following surgery, as this is a preventive way of decreasing the formation of adhesions in the first place.

    6. Consider what lifestyle adjustments you can make to optimize your health.

Once you know any active symptoms or concerns you’re having and prepare for any upcoming medical events, it’s also a good idea to discuss how to manage your health proactively. Four main lifestyle adjustments to improve your health include:

    1. Checking in about what you’re eating
    2. How are you moving your body
    3. Your sleep habits
    4. Your stress level.

By staying on top of these four pillars of health, you can optimize your wellness and continue enjoying the highest possible quality of life.

    7. Strongly consider pursuing physical therapy for your condition.

Identify a symptom on a self-check that leads to a formal diagnosis of a new condition. Your health professional may have provided you with several treatment options, including watchful waiting, lifestyle changes, prescription medications, procedures, or surgeries. It’s important to ask yourself questions about your treatment plan and whether your condition can also be managed with physical therapy.

The Clear Passage® Approach’s hands-on (manual) physical therapy methods can heal conditions traditionally managed with medications or invasive medical procedures. These conditions include:

  • 30 Internal Scarring Facts for National Self-Check Month

(Click title above to read post or scroll below.)

February is National Self-Check Month. Internal scarring (adhesions) in your pelvic region can occur throughout your life due to surgeries, accidents, and even natural wear and tear. This self-check month is meant for you to implement preventative health measures. These can include making better dietary choices, performing self-examinations, or going to a wellness visit with your physician to seek early treatment for symptoms associated with health problems.

What questions should you ask your physician during your wellness visit? Depending on what issues need to be resolved, physical therapy may be the treatment you need, particularly if you are experiencing illness, pain, and other health problems caused by adhesions.

How can you know if you have adhesion-related health problems? This article offers answers to these and other questions and makes a case for why you should ask your physician about physical therapy for adhesion-related conditions.

National Self-Check Month at Clear Passage®

National Self-Check Month raises awareness about the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent health problems and addressing existing health problems. One might imagine that preventing or addressing health problems would be easy, yet people avoid seeking medical care for many reasons. They may:

    • Feel that they are too busy.
    • Worry about the costs associated with care.
    • Have unfavorable opinions about health care providers, or;
    • Assume that symptoms will eventually improve without intervention.

No matter what it is, the truth is that avoiding medical care is not a good idea.

Lack of treatment, at best, can result in avoidable discomfort or suffering, and at worst, can result in late detection and treatment of a disease with severe or potentially deadly consequences.

Suppose you are experiencing illness, pain, or other health problems. In that case, it is crucial to advocate for yourself by seeking early treatment, not just any therapy, but customized solutions that are most likely to provide the best results. Doing so can result in the restoration of your body to its best possible condition or even complete relief and healing.

7 Questions You Should Ask Your Physician

During your wellness visit, your physician will review your family history of illness, your medical records, and vital signs, and perform an exam. Explain to your physician what habits you have regarding diet and exercise, sleep, and stress management.

Refer to this list of questions to help you get valuable feedback from your physician during your wellness visit. Be sure to jot down additional questions that come to mind as you continue reading this article.

    1. Based on your observations about my appearance, vital signs, and weight, what is your initial impression of my health?
      1. Ask for an explanation of your blood work results or other diagnostic test results, if available.
    2. Do you have any suggestions regarding my health habits?
    3. Am I prone to certain health risks based on my family history?
    4. Should I continue taking medications? Should the dosages be adjusted?
    5. Make a list of specific pains or other symptoms you may have experienced. Go through the list with your physician. Ask after each item, “Is this normal?”
    6. What treatment options are available for (fill in the blank)?
    7. Would I benefit from physical therapy for (fill in the blank)?

Surgery and/or Medication vs. Wurn Technique®’s Physical  Therapy

Although surgery and medication play a vital part in healthcare, they come with risks and a long list of potential side effects. On the other hand, Physical therapy can provide effective, long-lasting results without the risks and side effects, especially for adhesion-related problems.

Demonstrated Positive Results With Physical Therapy

Studies from major medical journals, available from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), demonstrate the results of physical therapy using the Clear Passage® Approach®. This non-surgical treatment utilizes the Wurn (hands-on) adhesion release techniques for various conditions caused or exacerbated by adhesions. This landmark 10-year study and many others demonstrated how this specialized, hands-on physical therapy yielded pregnancy rates for women with PCOS, small bowel obstruction (SBO), and at rates similar to standard medical treatments but without surgery or pharmaceuticals.

A Deeper Look: What are Adhesions?

What are adhesions? Adhesions are a type of scar tissue that forms inside the body after an accident, fall, surgery, infection, inflammation, trauma, radiation therapy, or endometriosis. Since surgery to treat adhesions can cause more adhesions, it makes perfect sense to treat adhesions with physical therapy rather than surgery.

Many people associate physical therapy with treatment for injuries or range-of-motion issues, and rightly so, because physicians readily prescribe physical therapy for those problems. But did you know that physical therapy can also effectively treat symptoms associated with a wide variety of diseases and conditions?

Clients with these ailments have found improvement and relief with physical therapy.

    • Lymphedema
    • Muscular dystrophy
    • Osteoporosis
    • Respiratory issues, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, and more,

When it comes to unexplained pain and dysfunction and biomechanical problems, physical therapy has a long track record of proven results. Physical therapists identify and treat the root cause of many peripheral problems, often a consequence of an underlying problem, such as adhesions.

The Comprehensive List of 30 Adhesion-Related Health Problems to Ask your Doctor about

Adhesions can squeeze nerves, organs, and joints – causing internal pain or dysfunction, including female infertility, life-threatening bowel obstructions, and numerous other problems. How can you know if you have adhesion-related health problems? This list provides some basic information about adhesion-related health problems and their causes.

    1. Menstrual Pain / Dysmenorrhea – Adhesions pull ligaments, fascias, or connective tissues that attach the uterus to surrounding structures
    2. Intercourse Pain / Sexual Dysfunction – Adhesions form between muscle cells deep within the cervix and/or attach to the vaginal wall, entrance, or other pain-sensitive structures.
      1. This reduces elasticity, potentially pulling the tailbone forward, and negatively impacts desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction.
    3. Endometriosis Pain – Adhesions pull on pain-sensitive structures caused by endometriosis.
    4. Genital Mutilation – Adhesions can cause a lifetime of chronic pain and dysfunction.
    5. Cervical Stenosis – Adhesions can tighten, narrow, or close the entrance to the uterus and pull on the uterus, causing inflammation, pain, and more adhesions.
      1. These can ascend within the uterus to block one or both fallopian tubes.
    6. Mastectomy Pain – Adhesions can form in the chest wall, neck, shoulders, and arms, causing pain and tightness or a condition called “frozen shoulder.”
    7. Hysterectomy Pain – Adhesions can form at the surgical site and connect to neighboring structures like the intestines, bowels, vagina, or bladder.
    8. C-Section Pain – Adhesions can form at the surgical site and cause pain and tightness in the pelvic region.
    9. Myomectomy Pain – Adhesions can form within the uterus and decrease the chances of successful implantation of a fertilized egg, increasing the likelihood of miscarriage, or form outside of the uterus and bind delicate reproductive structures together, impairing function.
    10. Blocked Fallopian Tubes – Adhesions and internal scars are the primary causes of tubal blockage.
    11. Hydrosalpinx – Adhesions can cause the swelling of the fallopian tubes.
    12. Endometriosis Infertility – Inflammation that accompanies the endometrial swelling can continually cause more and more adhesions to form, impairing functions necessary for fertility.
    13. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) – Adhesions can cover the ovaries.
    14. Pre-IVF Treatment / Age, High FSH & Hormonal – Adhesions can form at the uterus, cervix (called stenosis of the cervix), and fallopian tubes, and the dura and skull (near the pituitary, the “master gland” of female reproduction), reducing FSH levels and decreasing implantation rates.
    15. Unexplained Infertility (UI), a.k.a. Idiopathic Infertility – Adhesions are invisible on X-rays, ultrasounds, MRI, or CT scans.
    16. Secondary Infertility – A reproductive tract traumatized by the initial pregnancy or birth can result in adhesions that interfere with future fertility.
    17. Neck Pain – Adhesions can form when neck muscles are inflamed by poor posture, injury, or other causes.
    18. Back & Hip Pain – Adhesions can form at the sacral joints, causing biomechanical and soft tissue dysfunctions.
    19. Tailbone Pain – A misaligned tailbone can cause mobility problems, constipation, reproductive problems, and the formation of adhesions that aggravate all of these issues.
    20. Childhood Surgery/Trauma – When adhesions and scar tissue that form with surgery do not grow and expand with the rest of the body as the child grows, problems can last a lifetime.
    21. Migraines/Chronic Headaches – Internal scarring creates unnatural pressure that affects complex pain-sensitive structures in the head.
    22. TMJ/TMD – Adhesions can cause tightness or asymmetries that affect the jaw or temporomandibular joints.
    23. Myofascial Pain (MPS) – Adhesions cause mechanical problems with the body’s structure, resulting in pain.
    24. Post-Radiation Pain – Radiation therapy adhesions cause irradiated tissues to adhere to nearby organs, muscles, bones, and connective tissues.
    25. Pain After Abuse – Trauma causes adhesions that can remain in the body for a lifetime without intervention.
    26. Abdominal Pain – Internal scarring can form between the ribs and the pubic bone, decreasing function and causing pain.
    27. Pelvic Pain / Groin Pain – Internal scarring can form when the membrane covering the abdominal and pelvic organs becomes inflamed and or the infection spreads throughout the abdominopelvic cavity.
    28. Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Inflammatory Diseases – Adhesions are a significant concern for patients with inflammatory diseases, slowing digestion and causing pain, nausea, bloating, distension, constipation, or diarrhea.
    29. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) – Adhesions can slow or stop bacteria from exiting the digestive system, contributing to the recurrence of SIBO and causing additional adhesions.
    30. Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO) – Adhesions can interfere with or completely block the passage of food and waste material, causing stomach pain and “stringy poop.”

Do not avoid medical care or ignore illness, pain, or other health problems. During National Self-Check Month, make a wellness appointment, and be sure to ask your physician about physical therapy for any adhesion-related conditions you may have. Take a stand for your health by seeking treatment that will produce the desired results while avoiding the risks and side effects associated with surgery and medications.

    INFERTILITY & BOWEL OBSTRUCTION

Our researchers and physical therapists have studied the internal scars called adhesions for over 30 years. Where we can, we will share insights from several decades of experience in this area.

This forum is a place for anyone interested in this subject to ask questions that we (or others) may be able to answer accurately – preferably with medically or scientifically verifiable facts.

We are not here to promote our services or anyone else’s. We invite members to share their experiences with providers – or anything that has helped them (food, drink, exercise, supplement, etc.) We are not interested in second-hand accounts (e.g., my friend told me she followed a regimen of [blank] and did well). We support first-hand accounts and published scientific data.

ENDO AWARENESS MONTH IS OVER, ENDO IS NOT:
    PREVIOUS PATIENT SUCCESS STORY

Six Years of Infertility and Stage IV Endometriosis-Liz’s Story

When I was 24 years old, I was diagnosed with stage IV endometriosis. After I underwent surgery, my pain increased in severity and frequency.

Two years later, I married my long-time boyfriend, and we planned to have a perfect family. Because of my complications with endometriosis, I sought help from a fertility specialist and underwent another laparoscopic surgery. The surgeon drained a cyst, removed any endometriosis she found, and removed a stapled sac that was attached to the left ovary from my previous surgery.

Although the surgeon was optimistic that my endometriosis pain would be reduced, she told my husband and me we had a 1% chance of conceiving naturally. I was heartbroken; words cannot express the pain I endured at that moment.

I prayed for a miracle or a sign of hope. Then, I received a phone call from my sister. On her local news, there was a feature about a manual physical therapy treatment that could help women with endometriosis and infertility.

My husband was skeptical at first, but I needed to try it out. I immediately called and received a packet of information about the therapy. What we read made sense to us, so my husband and I decided to sign me up for the treatment. We packed our bags and headed to Florida.

The rest is history. Ten days after the treatment and six years of battling with infertility, I was pregnant! My husband and I were so shocked that we had to administer the pregnancy test three times to be sure.

I had a full-term pregnancy and gave birth to our beautiful baby boy. My son will be four at the end of this month, and we also have another addition to the family. I was able to conceive another baby three years later. She is almost a year old now. When we look at our children’s faces and into their eyes, we are still amazed by our little miracles.

    ENDOMETRIOSIS PATIENT TESTIMONIALS

Adhesions frequently accompany endometrial implants. When these tissues swell each month, the pull of adhesions can restrict normal function and cause pain and infertility.

The Clear Passage® Approach focuses on detaching these adhesions. After we release them, the endometrial tissue can swell and shrink freely without causing pain and discomfort.

You can learn more about our treatment for endometriosis pain or endometriosis infertility.

    CLEAR PASSAGE DURING COVID-19

Clear Passage® Physical Therapy has remained open over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. As vaccinations are being distributed, we are noticing a decline in COVID-19 cases throughout the state of Florida. Many of our clinic staff have been vaccinated as well. In Gainesville, where our main clinic is located, we currently have very few COVID cases.

Many patients continue to drive or fly to Gainesville or US locations. Those who live near London or New York find that those clinics are easily accessible. Once in a Clear Passage® clinic, you can be assured that we are taking the proper steps to ensure patient safety.

One advantage for Clear Passage® patients is that we typically treat very few patients each week. Even in our Gainesville, Florida headquarters, we generally treat a maximum of three patients a week. Thus, your exposure to any potential threat is much lower than most health clinics in the USA or UK. Additionally, you have been reserved a room for your treatment; that room is disinfected and sanitized twice daily. Our staff takes all precautions to ensure a safe and healthy treatment.

Florida clinic: Flying directly to the Gainesville airport may give you a greater comfort level than flying into Jacksonville, Orlando, or Tampa (which are up to 2 hours away from our clinic). Once patients arrive, many choose to stay in a private rental home. You can order food delivered and even order food before you arrive. The grocery stores here are not crowded, and the positive cases here are significantly lower than elsewhere.

Rent a car to take advantage of the numerous uncrowded outdoor sites. In Gainesville, the 400‑acre Kanahapa Botanical Gardens has beautiful topography with lakes. It is filled with plants and flowers from all over the world. After a day of therapy, a one-hour drive to Cedar Key treats you to sunset over the Gulf of Mexico. Staying in a private home is a bit like staying at your own home, interspersed with visits to a safe, clean clinic in which you are probably the only patient you are going to see.

Thus, making a determination of whether to save your life, return your quality of life, or return fertility need not be a scary decision. Feel free to call us for more information; we look forward to helping you heal.

    STAFF PICK: FAVORITE
    SPRINGTIME ACTIVITY

We understand that many people have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress can take a toll on the body and even create adhesions, leading to chronic pain – especially in the neck and back. Our staff chimed in with some activities that decrease stress, and get them outside and active!

Larry:  “Relaxing and breathing deeply while lying on my back in the grass, looking up at the clouds (in the daytime) and at the stars (at night)!”

Belinda: “Visit somewhere new, read a new book, and take wildlife photos.”

Autumn: “Having picnics in the park with my daughter and friends!”

Brenda: “I enjoy gardening in the spring, and making time to be outside in the sunshine.”

Julie: “Riding my bicycle and paddle boarding!”

Lidia:  “Spring Cleaning. Well, the general concept is more enjoyable to me than the activity, but it’s necessary.”

Kristen: “I always enjoy visiting a local blueberry farm to pick fresh blueberries with my family on a beautiful spring day!”

Jessica: “My family enjoys planting new flowers and getting our yard looking pretty!”

However you choose to enjoy springtime, remember to follow CDC guidelines for safety and health. The best way to get through this pandemic is by working together. Wear a mask, social distance, and hang in there!

    Overview

Adhesions form anywhere in the body, including the abdomen and pelvis – the area between the ribs and the pubic bone. Like adhesions elsewhere in the body, abdominal adhesions can act like an internal glue or a straitjacket, binding organs to other structures when they should be able to move freely around each other. Adhesions can also squeeze parts of organs or entire organs, decreasing function and sometimes causing pain.

Adhesions can slow or totally stop the movement of food through our digestive tract, creating a life-threatening condition called a small bowel obstruction (SBO). Adhesions can trap excess bacteria sometimes found within the intestine (SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) – decreasing or eliminating the effectiveness of medications.

SBO treatment: When published studies showed we could open fallopian tubes blocked by adhesions, we began developing therapy to clear the adhesions from the larger tubes, the intestines. We have had success in preventing repeat bowel obstructions for over a decade. You can read about our success in this area in published studies and on our Bowel Obstruction website page.

SIBO treatment: We found we could help SIBO when physician experts in the condition came to us, asking for our help. They said, “We can treat the excess bacteria with effective medications, but if there are adhesions in the intestines, the SIBO just returns. When you decrease the adhesions, the treated bacteria can finally exit the body.” They began referring patients with SIBO, and the results have generally been excellent. The combination of clearing bowel adhesions along with pharmaceutical and/or natural ingredients to stop the overgrowth turns out to be ‘just what the doctor ordered’ for many patients with SIBO.

Experience – We have been treating adhesions in the body since 1989. We hand-pick each therapist based on years of manual therapy experience, courses attended before we train them, their palpation and treatment skills, their focus, and their compassion. We train each extensively in the therapy we have researched and developed over the course of three decades.

Safety – We have developed our treatment over 30+ years with two goals: safety and effectiveness. We screen each patient for contraindications to therapy. We have treated several thousand complex cases and conditions. We often consult with physicians and scientists throughout the treatment process to ensure positive outcomes. Our procedures have been documented as safe. They are tailored to each patient’s needs.

Risks – We avoid risks due to our thorough screening process. The major risk is temporary soreness. Side effects of therapy are generally positive, including increased function, increased range of motion, and decreased pain.

Success rates – Our success rates are clear. They are peer-reviewed and published. Our success with long-term outcomes is encouraging. View our success rates here.

    Published Results

With published studies and citations in a dozen respected medical journals, Clear Passage®️

is the Gold Standard in the world for decreasing abdominal adhesions non-surgically. Study data authored by independent physicians support our credibility, efficacy, and success rates.

Clear Passage®️ constantly strives to measure our results scientifically and share them with the public – as reported in peer-reviewed medical journals. We have been researching and developing our therapy since 1989; our success rates are documented and housed in the U.S. Library of Medicine. Over the course of 30+ years, we have worked with physicians, surgeons, and scientists to develop a therapy that has been shown to be safe and effective.

    Clear Passage® During COVID-19

It’s a difficult choice. On one hand, you have an all-natural treatment shown to give life to women diagnosed as infertile, to return life, or save lives for people with long-standing pain or recurring small bowel obstructions. How does a person determine the safest way to proceed?

While we read that Florida has become a new epicenter of coronavirus, a closer look shows that the dramatic growth has been in South Florida, hundreds of miles from our national headquarters. The major cities of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando, and even Jacksonville are reporting high rates of coronavirus; generally speaking, Gainesville and Alachua County, where our main clinic is situated, are not.

Many patients continue to drive to Gainesville or our locations in Saint Louis or California. Those who live near London or New York find those clinics easily accessible. Once in a Clear Passage® clinic, you can be assured that we are taking the proper steps to ensure patient safety.

One advantage at Clear Passage® is that we typically treat very few patients at one time. Even in our Gainesville, Florida headquarters, we generally treat a maximum of three patients a week. Additionally, each patient is assigned their own room in our clinic for the entirety of their treatment at CP. Thus, your exposure to any potential threat is much lower than in most health clinics in the USA or UK.

Flying directly to the Gainesville airport may give you a greater comfort level than flying into Jacksonville, Orlando, or Tampa (which are up to 2 hours away from our clinic). Once patients arrive, many choose to stay in a private rental home. You can have food delivered and even order food before you arrive. The grocery stores here are not crowded, and the positive cases here are significantly lower than in other parts of the state.

We suggest you rent a car so you can take advantage of the numerous uncrowded outdoor sites. In Gainesville, the 400‑acre Kanahapa Botanical Gardens has beautiful topography with lakes filled with plants and flowers from all over the world. A one-hour drive and you can watch the Cedar Key sunset over the Gulf. Staying in a private home is a bit like staying at your own home, interspersed with visits to a safe, clean clinic in which you are probably the only patient you are going to see.

Thus, making a determination of whether to save your life, return your quality of life, or return the ability to be a mother is not such a scary decision as it might be. Feel free to call us for more information; we look forward to helping you heal.

Celebrating Life: A Patient’s Story Through Infertility

Two Blocked Fallopian Tubes, Despite Laparoscopy and Open Surgery
    – Marsha

Marsha was diagnosed with two totally blocked fallopian tubes by HSG, laparoscopy, and laparotomy (open surgery). Her pelvis was so adhered with scar tissue that she was diagnosed with “frozen pelvis.” She had no normal mobility in the pelvis because her organs and tissues were tightly adhered together in a mass. “It’s like glue was poured into her pelvis,” the physician said. “I am sorry to send you such a difficult case, but she certainly fits the criteria of therapy.”

Marsha had undergone both laparoscopy and open surgery (laparotomy) in hopes of correcting her tubal problems and decreasing her pelvic pain. Despite all medical attempts,  post-surgical diagnostic tests confirmed that both of her tubes remained totally closed, and even after the pelvic surgeries, she still had significant pain. We resolved to do our best to help her.

When Marsha came in for therapy, her situation was nothing short of severe. Years of inflammation, infection, and multiple surgeries had left her pelvis feeling like a rock. The skin was deeply sucked-in at her surgical scars. Guided by the determination and skills we had developed over years of treating Belinda and others with adhesion pain, we embarked, hoping to help a woman whose (Chief of Staff) physician had told us was an “impossible case.”

We began slowly and steadily to engage our hands in the tissues of Marsha’s pelvis. In the beginning, it felt as if we were pushing against a small boulder, immobile and impassive. However, as the hours passed and the outer layers of adhesions began to detach, we noticed that the boulder began to move upon palpation. Before long, we were able to move Marsha’s boulder a bit from side to side, then top to bottom, then diagonally. Working both externally and internally, we slowly peeled away layer after layer of adhesions until the boulder began to divide into smaller structures, which we called her “rocks and pebbles.” Eventually, most of these dissolved as well, and we were able to actually palpate specific organs within her pelvis. About this time, she reported that her back and intercourse pain, both of which had been severe, had dissipated significantly.

At the time, we had absolutely no idea how many hours of treatment we should render if we were to open either of her tubes. We were just going by touch, feel, and patient feedback. In the end, after 23 hours of manual therapy, we felt Marsha was ready for a repeat dye test. We held our breaths as we sent our test patient for an independent follow-up dye test. To the utter surprise of everyone, the test results were nothing short of remarkable.

The diagnostic physician reported that one of Marsha’s tubes was now completely free, clear, and open with “free spillage” of the dye. In addition, the dye went measurably further through the other tube. We had done it! We had improved both tubes and totally opened one when two different surgeries had failed to achieve any results at all!

Belinda: My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is going to Cabo San Lucas with Larry and enjoying time on the beautiful Sunset Beach.

Autumn: Usually, we go to my sister’s house and eat dinner and watch football while all the kids play outside. If the weather is nice enough, we will have a small bonfire at night.

Brenda: Watching Football after eating dinner and playing board games with family.

Jessica: My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is going to my parents’ ranch. The kids get to go play with the animals and drive around the pastures on the Polaris. They jump on the trampoline and climb trees. I help my Mom in the kitchen with cooking and cleaning. My Dad and the other men usually watch football or racing. The main thing is that everyone is laughing and genuinely happy. It is a very humbling and wholesome feeling to spend quality time with my family.

Julie: Making a white bean chili with southwestern spices with the leftover turkey!

Lidia: My Thanksgiving traditions are eating Chinese takeout and binge-watching TV. I can’t pick a favorite between those two; I just really enjoy vegging out with my sister and our cats.

Carolin: My cousin’s birthday is November 23rd, so we always have a birthday cake at the end of Thanksgiving dinner. It’s nice to be able to celebrate with my entire family since we all live so far apart.

Aura:  I usually stress out for 3 weeks prior to trying to cook and freeze enough food for the incoming army. So my tradition is to eat as much as possible so that I can enjoy the fruits of my labor!

    CLEAR PASSAGE DURING COVID-19

It’s a difficult choice. On one hand, you have an all‑natural treatment shown to give life to women diagnosed as infertile, to return life, or to save lives for people with long-standing pain or recurring small bowel obstructions. How does a person determine the safest way to proceed?

While we read that Florida has become a new epicenter of coronavirus, a closer look shows that the dramatic growth has been in South Florida, hundreds of miles from our natural headquarters.

One advantage of Clear Passage® is that we typically treat very few patients at one time. Even in our Gainesville, Florida headquarters, we generally treat a maximum of three patients a week.

You can order food delivered and even order food before you arrive.

A one-hour drive to Cedar Key sunset over the gulf.

    CELEBRATING LIFE: WELCOME TO OUR
    NEWEST CLEAR PASSAGE MIRACLE BABY

After 8 years of unexplained infertility, a healthy baby boy!

    -Jessica

I suffered for 8 years with unexplained infertility. My husband and I had last conceived in December 2011. We were so excited as this would be our first child together since we both have children from previous relationships. My husband kept saying he just knew we were going to have a boy and had already picked out his name.

Unfortunately, we lost the baby. We were both beyond devastated. This miscarriage took a toll on me both mentally and physically. My husband tried his best to comfort me, but I pushed him away. I felt so empty and broken. I felt like less of a woman because I wasn’t able to give him the baby boy that he wanted so badly. As time passed, we kept trying to conceive again but had no luck. I had gone to several different doctors who told me they couldn’t find anything wrong with me; my menstrual cycles and hormone levels were normal. Trying to conceive was an emotional roller-coaster. Every month, I’d get my hopes up, just to be let down again.

I began working at Clear Passage® Therapies in November 2018 as a patient coordinator. When I started, I asked if I could work mainly with the women struggling with infertility because I felt that connection with them; I knew the struggle they were going through. At this point, my husband and I had quit trying to conceive. I was 36, he was 40, and our kids were teenagers. But when I was talking to these women about infertility and how therapy can help them to conceive, I felt like I was able to live through them. It gave me a sense of happiness.

In September 2019, the Gainesville clinic hired a new therapist. Before she could start treating our patients, she had to do hands-on training. God just happened to be on my side that day, because everyone else was busy and I had just gotten off the phone. Our therapist, Kristen, asked if I would volunteer for training, knowing my infertility diagnosis. I said, “Of course!”

On the very first day of treatment, they were able to tell me that both of my fallopian tubes were blocked. On day two, they were able to tell me that my lower back pain was being caused by my adhesions. My cervix was being pulled posteriorly and adhered to my bladder and tailbone. On day three, they were able to tell me that I was ovulating and should go home and see what would happen. That day was October 16, 2019, and it happened to be our 5-year wedding anniversary! Fast forward to November 2019, and I was out sick for a week – and I found out I was pregnant! I conceived the week I got treated! My son Hayden was a very healthy boy, weighing 6.13 lbs, despite being born two weeks early due to preeclampsia on June 24th. I can never thank my Clear Passage® family enough for giving us the most precious gift of all. We are so grateful to be able to share our story and help others who are struggling with infertility, and let them know that there is hope!!

STAFF PICK: SELF-CARE TIPS DURING QUARANTINE

We understand that many people have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress can take a toll on the body and even create adhesions, leading to chronic pain – especially in the neck and back. Our staff chimed in with advice for de-stressing, relaxing, and rejuvenating your body.

Larry: “Whatever you put in your mind grows. Give yourself a break and download a beautiful audiobook adventure or love story; that, or take an audio course to expand your mind and escape from the world for a while.”

Belinda: “Be sure to keep exercising, and if you have pets, play with them every day. We’ve been giving our dogs lots of love and attention.”

Autumn: “Meditation, exercise, and hot baths with the door locked so the kids can’t get in!”

Brenda: “Read a real book – not just an eBook. Listening to meditation music and doing yoga are also very helpful.”

Julie: “Buy a soft 36” foam roller and learn to massage yourself with it by rolling in various directions. Download the Insight Timer (or HeadSpace) app on your phone and meditate. There are thousands of meditations to choose from.”

Lidia: “Work on a project you’ve been putting off, such as knitting a scarf or trying a new recipe. Or you can plan a trip in the future; it can be very exciting to imagine next year’s relaxing summer vacation.”

Stephanie: “Order some at-home spa products and pamper yourself. I have a few face masks I never had time to use; now I take a few minutes each week to care for my skin. It’s so refreshing!”

Aura: Things that help me most are 1) morning prayer (or meditation); 2) daily exercise; and 3) create a schedule with open ‘electives’ for creative time (artwork, photography, journaling, etc.). “

However you choose to self-care, remember to follow CDC guidelines for safety and health. The best way to get through this pandemic is by working together. Wear a mask, social distance, and hang in there!
