Understanding Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists for more than 3 to 6 months, often outlasting the usual healing time for an injury or illness. Unlike acute pain, which is a natural response to injury or inflammation, chronic pain can continue even after the underlying cause has been resolved. It can affect any part of the body, including the musculoskeletal, nervous, and visceral systems, and may be caused by a variety of factors, including injuries, surgery, infections, or conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic back pain. Chronic pain can also be linked to nerve damage or the development of adhesions or scar tissue following surgeries.

Living with chronic pain can lead to a significant decline in quality of life, affecting physical function, emotional well-being, and mental health. Individuals with chronic pain often experience sleep disturbances, depression, anxiety, and reduced mobility.
